Which wiring harness should you choose?
When browsing towbar wiring harnesses, you might come across several types. How do they differ? Does one work differently from the other? Which is better? Do they differ significantly in price? We'll try to answer these questions below.

Types of electrical harnesses.

  1. Standard 7 PIN electrical harness.
The 7-pin wiring harness without an electronic module is suitable for trailers with a gross vehicle weight not exceeding 750 kg and does not incorporate a reversing light. It is intended for use in older vehicles where the installation does not require an additional module for proper operation.

  1. Standard 13-pin wiring harness.
The 13-pin harness without an electronic module can be used for trailers weighing over 750 kg, as it also includes a reversing light, which is mandatory for such trailers. The standard 13-pin wiring harness can also be expanded with additional functions, such as charging caravan batteries or providing a constant positive power supply for caravans, refrigerated trailers, etc. Because not everyone needs caravan-specific functions, the standard 13-pin harness comes with several spare pins, for which the above-mentioned extensions can be purchased.

  1. Universal wiring harness with electronic module.
Universal wiring harness with electronic module. Universal wiring harnesses with electronic module are used in vehicles with an electronic light control system (so-called Check-Control) or whose electrical system is based on the CAN-BUS bus. Using a wiring harness with a module is mandatory. Installing a wiring harness without a module in a vehicle that requires it can, at best, result in no lighting on the trailer, and at worst, serious damage to the vehicle's electrical system. 7-pin wiring harnesses with a module are available for trailers with a permissible gross weight of up to 750 kg, while a 13-pin wiring harness with a module can be used for trailers heavier than 750 kg, as it also includes a reversing light, which is mandatory for such trailers. An option in these wiring harnesses is the additional function of cutting off the parking sensors when reversing (so-called PDC modules).
Catalog number: SMP-2E (Universal 7-PIN wiring harness with module)
Catalog number: SMP-2PE (Universal 7-PIN wiring harness with module + parking sensors)
Catalog number: SMP-4E (Universal 13-PIN wiring harness with module)
Catalog number: SMP-4PE (Universal 13-PIN wiring harness with module + parking sensors)

type4
  1. Dedicated wiring harness.
Dedicated wiring harnesses are designed for a specific make, model, and year of vehicle, ensuring the safest solution and fastest installation. These harnesses are connected using the original plugs/connectors designed for the specific vehicle. Connection methods may vary depending on the vehicle model. In some cases, connecting the module will require a single plug, while in others, multiple plugs may be required. Connecting to the fuse box and activating the module may also be necessary. Dedicated wiring harnesses are manufactured for a 7-pin trailer socket for trailers up to 750 kg and a 13-pin socket for trailers heavier than 750 kg. Depending on the vehicle model, these harnesses may include many additional features, such as ESP, TSP, and a PDC module that cuts off the parking sensors when reversing.
